Be clear on your stance on equality.
Everyone has the responsibility to be culturally aware. But if you don’t live somewhere that is culturally diverse it’s hard to gain insight into cultures that are different from your own.
Don’t cancel yourself by saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.
Lay a foundation so that you can connect with different members of your audience when they need you most.
It would be easy to ask any Black, Indigenous or Person of Color about issues that affect their communities. But every person you meet is not a representative of their race and calling on hurt communities to describe their anguish to you time and time again is emotionally draining. Black people don’t owe you an explanation, especially at the cost of their mental health.
You need to be prepared to have tough conversations.
And that starts with you taking a bold stance in support of marginalized communities.
